Pre-training Required Reading:
The Ramayana is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahābhārata in which we find the Bhagavad Gita.
This epic story narrates the life of Rama, a legendary prince of an ancient kingdom. It follows his fourteen-year exile to the forest, his travels across India with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, the kidnapping of his wife by Ravana the great king of Lanka, resulting in a war with him and Rama's eventual return home to be crowned king.
The Ramayana depicts the duties of relationships with the cast main characters: the ideal father, the ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal husband, the ideal wife and the ideal king. Like The Mahabharata, the Ramayana presents the teachings of ancient Hindu sages in narrative allegory, interjecting philosophical and ethical elements.
Due to the length of the text, you are required to read it in advance so we can later discuss as a group the insights you gleaned from it, as well as the qualities and symbolism of its main characters and the core teachings of this masterpiece.
